As much as groups like Hearthside educate the public about spaying and neutering, there are too many kittens born every year, many that end up abandoned.
Consider these facts from the American Humane Association:
- Approximately 8 million stray and unwanted animals are taken in by shelters across the country each year.
71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized because good homes cannot be found for them. In fact,
shelter euthanasia is the leading cause of death for cats in the U.S.
- Despite increased public awareness about the need to spay and neuter, 35% of pet owners still choose not to do so.
- Many people who breed their cats believe they aren't adding to the pet overpopulation problem if they find homes
for all of the kittens. But many will end up in shelters at some point anyway.
On a local level, Hearthside is helping to alleviate the overpopulation problem. In 2011, we accepted 43 cats,
had them neutered or spayed if needed, and placed a total of 59 into loving new homes, thus saving many cats from a
life of hardship. As a no-kill organization, we use euthanasia only if pain or suffering cannot be relieved. It is
because of your support that we can continue to provide these valuable services. So if you can, please consider making
a donation to the 2012 Kitten Appeal. Every dollar will go directly to care for the cats.
